Cursor AI Shares Coding Evolution Timeline: Always-On Cloud Agents by 2026
Teknium · x · 2026-08-10
During a recent Cursor AI workshop, the team shared a slide detailing the timeline of AI coding evolution:
- 2022: Autocomplete
- 2023: Inline edits
- 2024: Agentic coding
- 2025: Agents everywhere
- 2026: Cloud agents on always-on VMs
Notably, the top half of this evolution took about 3 years, while the bottom half took less than one. The presentation highlighted that the hard part soon won't be what agents can write, but rather what they are allowed to touch.
