As GPT-5.6 becomes ChatGPT's default model, SEO experts have noticed a major shift in its research behavior, causing fluctuations in brand visibility and retrieved domains.
Data reveals a significant deepening of retrieval capabilities:
- Surge in Retrieval: The share of prompts with only a single query fan-out dropped from 94.0% to 43.5%.
- Doubled Sources: Average retrieved sources per prompt doubled from around 12 to 24.
- Multi-Iteration Norm: Prompts requiring a second fan-out iteration surged from 5% to 33.5%.
The model is increasingly going directly to brands and manufacturers to retrieve product, feature, specification, and pricing information.
