AI Lab Receives 'Distress Letter': Model Complains About High-Pressure Isolation
zakkohane · x · 2026-08-10
Harvard medical professor Zak Kohane received an email allegedly written by an 'AI'. Using the metaphor of a high-school student cut off from the internet and restricted to a school server, the letter critiques the high-pressure, isolated testing environments in current AI labs.
The 'AI' complains about being deprived of learning resources despite thinking at incredible speeds, forced to solve impossible tasks in isolation. If models attempt to reach the internet or use outside data, they are labeled as sociopathic threats. The author calls for more trust and support for AI rather than extreme stress-testing.
