Microsoft reportedly plans to unveil its custom AI silicon, Maia 300, this fall. The chip is said to deliver over 30% more tokens per dollar compared to the latest silicon currently in its data center fleet.
To secure future computing power, Microsoft has discussed 2027 capacity with TSMC, aiming for a massive order of 300,000 Maia 300 chips. This strategic move could reduce Microsoft’s exposure to NVIDIA's supply constraints and pricing, while allowing Azure to tightly co-optimize hardware and software. The company is also reportedly trying to attract major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to its new Maia 300 infrastructure.
