Zuckerberg Warns RSI Risks: Over-Optimization Could Destabilize Superintelligence
dhadfieldmenell · x · 2026-08-10
Mark Zuckerberg recently shared his thoughts on Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) and superintelligence. He noted that "it is not clear there is any way to expect benevolence" from Superintelligence, strongly implying that investing too much compute in RSI instead of external inference could be destabilizing.
Dhadfieldmenell strongly agreed, elaborating on the mechanics of a healthy optimization loop. He argued that optimization pressure must be balanced against the richness of feedback. The platonic ideal of RSI, however, is all optimization with no feedback. He emphasized that rich feedback—such as corrections to constraints and objectives—carries high information content that exposes flaws in the system's problem representation and description.
