South Australia is set to hold a royal commission into artificial intelligence and its surrounding policies, representing the highest form of public inquiry in the country.

State Premier Peter Malinauskas warned that unchecked AI poses a "material risk to the way society operates." The investigation is expected to commence on October 1 and deliver a final report to the government no later than July 1 of next year.
