After less than 10 months, OpenAI shut down its AI-native browser, Atlas. Its agentic browsing capabilities will be merged into ChatGPT and a Chrome extension, albeit with some loss in cross-site memory. This signals that the high costs of the independent AI browser route are unsustainable.
Why is the independent route too expensive?
- Extreme engineering costs: Maintaining Chromium compatibility, multi-platform support, and native UIs requires 3 to 10 times (sometimes dozens) the R&D investment of a simple Chrome extension.
- Bottomless security spending: Agents operating directly on web pages face severe prompt injection risks, leading to massive defense expenditures.
- Underwhelming ROI: In real-world tests, agentic tasks often encountered blockers and ran slowly. Combined with macOS exclusivity and no independent monetization model, its incremental retention couldn't justify the investment.
Industry Landscape Shift
Overseas tech giants have retreated. Google and Microsoft are embedding AI directly into Chrome and Edge; Anthropic, lacking a browser, only launched a Claude extension. Rather than forcing users to switch browsers, giants prefer to integrate into existing entry points.
The Narrow Path for Independent AI Browsers
Despite low mainstream adoption, AI-native browsers still hold value. Designed for both humans and AI to share the same environment, they bypass the permission ceilings of third-party extensions. The future goal has shifted from "replacing Chrome" to becoming a user's "second browser," focusing on specific scenarios like enterprise security or vertical tasks (e.g., Meituan's recently launched Tabbit).
