OpenAI Shuts Down Atlas Browser After 292 Days, Shifts to Integrations

OpenAI's standalone AI browser, Atlas, has officially reached its end of life, lasting only 292 days from launch to shutdown. Atlas aimed to reinvent human-computer interaction by supporting address bar queries, sidebar summaries, and multi-step Agent operations, built on Chromium and the proprietary OWL architecture.
However, the engineering burden of maintaining a full browser far exceeded expectations. OpenAI had to continuously patch basic features like IME, passwords, and extensions, while its core Agent experience remained unstable in long tasks and faced severe prompt injection risks. Against giants like Chrome, Atlas lacked a compelling enough experience to justify user migration. OpenAI will abandon the standalone browser form factor, pivoting to integrate these AI capabilities into the ChatGPT desktop app and browser extensions.
