Demis Hassabis originally intended to leave Google alongside Jeff Dean, but management persuaded him to stay, fearing a mass exodus would crash the stock, according to industry sources.

Hassabis transitioned to Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Dean departed to launch Discovery Loop, an AI science startup. Insiders predict Hassabis may truly exit Google within a year. In the interim, he plans to focus more heavily on Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery startup he founded within Alphabet.
