Miles Brundage: AI R&D Automation is Evolving Step-by-Step into RSI

Miles Brundage explains that the transition toward automated AI R&D and recursive self-improvement (RSI) occurred in gradual steps: from IDE autocomplete to coding agents with tool use, then to automated R&D, and finally RSI. Before the first step, this progression was correctly perceived as a crazy idea.
He notes that while some experts like Jeff Clune (who explored this in his 2019 AI-GAs paper) thought through the safety implications early on, many others in the field are currently not paying enough attention to these obvious risks.
