Jeff Dean Departs, DeepMind Overhauled, Gemini 3.5 Pro Cancelled: SemiAnalysis
koltregaskes · x · 2026-08-10
According to a recent SemiAnalysis article, Google has completely overhauled DeepMind's leadership. Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day operations, while Jeff Dean is leaving to start a new lab called Discovery Loop, joined by top Google engineers like Sanjay Ghemawat and Quoc Le.
The report suggests these moves indicate DeepMind is effectively no longer a frontier lab, with near-zero odds of reclaiming SOTA. Furthermore, the planned Gemini 3.5 Pro has been silently cancelled. Thomas Kurian's Google Cloud has won the internal battle for compute allocation, which is expected to significantly accelerate GCP's revenue growth.
