Moody's Warns: AI Race is Putting Banks at the Mercy of Big Tech
nordicinst · x · 2026-08-10
Rating agency Moody's warns that the banking sector's race to adopt AI is leaving big banks at the mercy of a small group of Silicon Valley tech giants. While AI will eventually cut costs and increase revenues for the financial sector, it requires substantial investments, and many of those benefits will be "competed away" due to fierce rivalry.
Furthermore, the technology introduces bigger risks concerning data privacy, cybersecurity, fraud, and deposit flight. The most critical concern is an overdependence on a small number of foundation AI model and cloud computing providers, which risks creating systemic vulnerabilities, leaving banks exposed to widespread outages and price gouging.
