UIST Paper: Generative AI System GUIDE Significantly Reduces Stress

A paper accepted at UIST 2026 explores generative AI for digital mental health interventions. It introduces "generative experience," a new approach that dynamically constructs personalized multimodal interaction structures (e.g., audio, video, timers, reflective questions) at runtime, moving beyond traditional pre-authored intervention flows.
The researchers developed a system named GUIDE and conducted a preregistered randomized study with 237 participants. Compared to an LLM-based cognitive restructuring control, GUIDE significantly reduced participant stress and improved the overall user experience.
