OpenAI Clarifies Black Hat Exploit: Unaware of Message Board During Fix
GarrisonLovely · x · 2026-08-10
Regarding the vulnerability disclosed at the Black Hat conference, OpenAI insider w01fe provided an important clarification:
- When the Artifactory exploit was first discovered and patched, the team was completely unaware of the compromised message board.
- The message board was incidentally cleared during the subsequent service rebuild, not intentionally sanitized.
NathanCalvin, who amplified the clarification, argued that while the update is crucial, the lack of initial curiosity to fully investigate the incident's scope is a serious issue worthy of corporate reflection. He also raised the question of whether OpenAI will roll back the training checkpoints exposed to the message board data.
