DeepMind's WeatherNext Hits Nature: Cyclone Forecasting Jumps a Decade Ahead
shakoistsLog · x · 2026-08-10
Google DeepMind announced that its WeatherNext AI model achieves state-of-the-art accuracy in predicting tropical cyclone tracks, intensity, and wind structure. On average, the model provides forecasters with an extra day of predictive accuracy, equating to roughly a decade's worth of meteorological progress.
During the 2025 hurricane season, the model helped the NHC make a historic forecast for Hurricane Melissa by predicting its rapid intensification. Detailed in a paper published in Nature, DeepMind is also open-sourcing the model, which can now generate 1,000 possible scenarios per cyclone to aid disaster preparedness.
