AI Won't Kill Gaming: Supply Explodes, but Distribution Gets Harder
nptacek · x · 2026-08-10
Countering the claim that AI will destroy gaming because everyone will build their own, fabianstelzer argues:
- Supply vs. Distribution: Pre-AI, Steam saw 20k games/year with fewer than 200 real hits. If AI pushes this to 2M games/year, the baseline economics won't change much, but distribution will become drastically harder.
- Creators vs. Consumers: While we'll see successful indie devs who never code, AI alters the cognitive makeup of creators but doesn't flip the raw human ratio of wanting to create vs. consume.
- Limits of Vibe Coding: AI-generated games only work for specific niches. 99% of players will still prefer experiences crafted by professionals.
