Meta Prices Coding Agent Below Cost to Trade for Training Data

shashib · x · 2026-08-10

Independent analysis reveals that Meta's newly launched coding agent, Muse Code, employs an aggressive pricing strategy. Its Contributor tier is priced at just $0.20 per million output tokens, undercutting the standard pay-as-you-go rate by more than 10x.

Deep Discount in Exchange for Data

This steep discount comes with a catch: developers must allow Meta to use their prompts and completions as training data. Unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, Meta has turned the agent launch into a data acquisition strategy to support its massive AI capital expenditure ($145B ceiling for 2026). Alexandr Wang, head of Meta Superintelligence Labs, admitted the product competes on cost rather than capability.
