Dev Rants: Why Do Autonomous Agents Fail at Basic Context Inference?
ThatIsNotIllegal · reddit · 2026-08-10
A developer on Reddit expressed frustration over their Hermes agents making inexplicably dumb decisions in daily workflows. For instance, when asked to find a Speech-to-Text (STT) tool, the agent got stuck in a loop, repeatedly recommending either overpriced options or unreliable free local models, failing to adapt to the user's feedback.
In a more glaring example, the agent spent three hours autonomously building a dedicated software tool for a specific task (XYZ). However, when instructed to execute task XYZ, instead of using the tool it just built, it spent another three hours developing an entirely new, inferior tool. The developer questioned whether autonomous agents should be expected to infer such obvious context without being explicitly commanded to use their own creations.
