Google May Retire Free Gemini Gems in October, Forcing Shift to Paid Skills

testingcatalog · x · 2026-08-10

According to a hidden feature flag spotted by TestingCatalog, Google is preparing to retire the free Gems feature in the Gemini web app by October 20, pushing users toward Skills.

The transition is awkward due to a significant gap between the two formats. While Gems are free for everyone, Skills live inside Gemini Spark, require a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, are restricted to personal accounts, and remain unavailable in regions like the EEA and the UK. The notice implies no automated migration is planned yet, meaning heavy users—particularly in Korea, who have built extensive Gem libraries—might have to manually rebuild their custom configurations.
