CMU Professor Tests ChatGPT Autonomously Proving Mechanism Design Results

CMU Professor Vincent Conitzer shared an experiment testing LLMs' ability to conduct autonomous academic research. By providing ChatGPT with only a minimal prompt—to prove an interesting result using automated mechanism design—the model successfully generated a complete technical proof.

Mechanism design is a classic field in economic theory focused on finding optimal decision-making rules (like auction rules) among self-interested participants. Conitzer previously proposed 'automated mechanism design,' where computers search for optimal rules, but human experts were always required for the final theoretical abstraction and theorem derivation.

This experiment demonstrates that LLMs can now move beyond the stage of 'following human-specified directions,' autonomously exploring and outputting valid, complex academic results, showcasing massive potential for AI in automating scientific research.
