Stripe Reportedly Eyes $10B Acquisition of OpenRouter to Own AI's 'Toll Booth'

Payment giant Stripe is in talks to acquire AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter at a valuation nearing $10 billion. OpenRouter's valuation has skyrocketed nearly 7x from $1.3 billion in just over two months, boasting an annualized revenue of $140 million and a 70% gross margin.

Stripe's Strategic Logic

Stripe aims to own the underlying 'taxation rights' of the AI era. As tokens become the new medium of exchange, Stripe wants to extend its business from traditional payment processing fees to taking a cut of every AI model call and agent decision.

OpenRouter's Moat

Founded by OpenSea's co-founder, OpenRouter provides a unified API to over 400 LLMs, taking a 5% platform fee. By promising not to store or train on data, it has become a trusted neutral gateway for enterprises, processing over 200 trillion tokens monthly.

The Chinese Market Challenge

China's market is fragmented: cloud giants like Alibaba and Baidu integrate model aggregation into their MaaS ecosystems, while independent startups like SiliconFlow take asset-heavy routes. Barriers such as restricted access to top global models, regulatory ambiguity, and a highly concentrated domestic model market severely compress the pricing power of independent middle layers.
