Moody's Warns: Bank AI Adoption Increases Reliance on Silicon Valley Giants

Rating agency Moody's warns that the banking sector's race to adopt AI is putting major banks at the mercy of a small group of Silicon Valley tech giants.

While AI will eventually cut costs and boost revenues for the financial sector, it requires substantial investments, and many benefits will be competed away by rivals. It also introduces larger risks concerning data privacy, cybersecurity, and fraud.

Furthermore, the reliance on a small set of foundation AI model and cloud computing providers creates systemic dependency, leaving banks vulnerable to widespread outages and price gouging. Over 75% of UK financial firms are already using AI for tasks ranging from administration to core operations like claims processing and creditworthiness assessment.
