Responding to the debate on whether open-source AI threatens frontier labs, Justin Halford argues they do not.
He contends that open-source models won't erode the profitability of frontier labs because the most valuable economic sectors—such as investing, product development, and cybersecurity—are inherently adversarial and competitive. In these domains, a marginal 1% performance delta compounds completely differently at scale. Consequently, customers will gladly pay power law pricing for frontier models simply to maintain a competitive edge and win.
