Stanford Team Unveils OpenDerm: An Open-Source Robot for At-Home Skin Cancer Tracking

Former Stanford student Marion Lepert developed OpenDerm, an open-source 4-DOF robot, inspired by a personal melanoma scare. The device captures high-resolution skin images to reconstruct and track 3D skin surface changes over time, addressing the difficulty of visually detecting subtle abnormalities.
The author argues that early skin cancer detection is fundamentally a home robotics problem. By shifting expensive clinical screenings to low-cost daily home checks, OpenDerm proves the feasibility of accessible, robotic skin imaging.
