Could AI Have Discovered Relativity? A Physicist's Take on Science and LLMs

Physicist Sabine Hossenfelder discusses the potential of AI in scientific research. She notes that AI can tie up loose ends in vast scientific literature by leveraging its massive memory and rapid processing, which will drive significant short-term progress across disciplines.
Addressing whether AI could have done what Einstein did, she answers yes. She argues that Einstein's breakthrough with relativity was largely about synthesizing existing theoretical pieces like Maxwell's equations and Lorentz transformations—something AI is well-suited to do by identifying inconsistencies in data.
However, she views the development of quantum mechanics as a much harder test for AI. Unlike relativity, it involved making sense of messy data and inventing entirely new mathematical frameworks, suggesting that reproducing such a paradigm shift would be a far greater challenge.
