Report: Hassabis Planned to Leave Google; AI Power Consolidated in California
量子位 · wechat · 2026-08-09
Demis Hassabis originally planned to leave Google alongside Jeff Dean, but management convinced him to stay to prevent a stock plunge and core team collapse, according to Pathfounders. His transition to Chairman is seen as a temporary measure, with predictions he may leave entirely within a year to focus on AI for Science.
Simultaneously, Google is consolidating its AI power back to California. CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu and other key leaders have relocated to the HQ, taking over daily operations and reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. DeepMind's independent AlphaFold team has also been restructured to redirect resources toward commercial projects like Gemini.
