NIST Proves Quantum Entanglement Survives Long Distances on Ordinary Fiber Cables

NIST, collaborating with the University of Maryland and Qunnect, has demonstrated that quantum entanglement signals can travel long distances stably over existing commercial fiber optic cables.
In the experiment, photon pairs traveled 62 kilometers (38.5 miles) between two labs in Maryland using standard, unshielded aerial fiber exposed to weather and heat. Over 24 hours of continuous operation, the system achieved a 92.8% delivery success rate while sending 1,500 linked photon pairs per second. This breakthrough suggests that future quantum networks could be built using existing internet infrastructure without the need for expensive, dedicated quantum cables.
