The co-founder of Tacta Systems recently showcased their 5-finger fluidic tendon hand on a podcast, explaining the rationale behind their primary 3-finger design.

The team used 5-finger data capture gloves on real industrial tasks and discovered that humans primarily engage only three fingers even for highly complex operations, while the other two are just along for the ride. Thus, the 3-finger design was driven by practical experience rather than dogma, though 5-finger versions will always remain an option.
