MIT Scholar Explains AI Discovery Process Through Statistical Mechanics

MIT Professor Markus Buehler shared his recent research at an academic conference, highlighting a striking similarity between the process of scientific discovery and statistical mechanics.
He pointed out a "greedy optimum trap" in AI exploration: a descent-only search relying purely on gradient descent stalls at the old vocabulary. Adding a new primitive might hurt model performance initially before it helps, and "temperature" is the key mechanism that allows models to cross this discontinuity and discover beyond their training data.
