Can AI Agents Replace Bureaucracy? Food Safety Shows Why We Still Need It

While many argue that AI agents could negotiate on our behalf and reduce the need for bureaucracy, this isn't entirely practical. In areas like food safety, common standards are still necessary. You can't have every buyer's agent negotiating different acceptable levels of substances like arsenic in cereal with every supplier. Studying evidence, setting common standards, and applying them consistently is what bureaucracy does, and it remains essential in an agentic future.
