GPT-4's 4th Anniversary: MIT Professor Reflects on Early Multi-Agent AI Scientist

Marking the fourth anniversary of GPT-4 finishing training, MIT Professor Markus Buehler reflected on his team's early prototype of an "AI scientist" built on the model.
This multi-agent system could autonomously plan research, write and execute code, collect first-principles (DFT) data, fit regression models, and share the final results with human researchers. The work was featured on the cover of ACS Engineering Au.
He noted that four years later, "AI scientists" have evolved into an independent research field, and he congratulated the OpenAI team for setting this transformative progress in motion.
