MIT Prof Reflects on GPT-4: Built the First Proto-AI Scientist 4 Years Ago
ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-09
Professor Markus Buehler celebrated the 4th anniversary of GPT-4 finishing training. At the time, his team built an early proto-AI scientist multi-agent system using the model.
The system could autonomously plan, write and execute code, collect first-principles (DFT) data, fit a regression model, and share the results. Four years later, AI scientists are becoming a field of their own.
