US Navy Shipbuilder HII Signs $900M Deal to Deploy Physical AI Robots in Warship Manufacturing

US Navy's largest shipbuilder HII has signed a seven-year agreement worth up to $900 million with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics to integrate physical AI and autonomous robotics into naval shipbuilding.
Key deployments:
- Path Robotics: Autonomous welding powered by its Obsidian physical AI model, featuring Rove, a quadruped robot that operates beyond fixed cells directly on large immovable structures.
- GrayMatter Robotics: Autonomous robotic sanding systems.
- Scope: Welding, grinding, blasting, painting, assembly, and inspection.
The program, named HYPR (High-Yield Production Robotics), aims to outsource 2.5 million hours of shipbuilding work to robotic systems in 2026 alone, representing a 30% increase from the previous year.
