NeurIPS AI-Assisted Reviews Spark Controversy: Reviewers Using LLMs for Superficial Feedback
OutsideSimple4854 · reddit · 2026-08-09
A NeurIPS reviewer recently took to Reddit to vent about the chaos caused by AI-assisted reviewing. The author noted a stark contrast between their own detailed feedback and other reviewers' use of LLMs to generate superficial, nitpicky comments.
More severely, one reviewer broke double-blind rules by pasting an LLM-generated rejection rationale during the discussion period, which wasn't in their initial review and completely ignored the author's rebuttal. The post also highlights a missed opportunity: reviewers unfamiliar with the paper's specific notation could use LLMs to ask questions and understand the context better, rather than just using them to generate boilerplate rejections.
