Stanford Nature Study: Intensive AI Companion Use Linked to Lower Well-Being

A Stanford NLP team (including Diyi Yang et al.) published a new study in Nature Human Behaviour examining the relationship between AI companion usage and users' psychological well-being.
The researchers collected self-reported data from 1,131 US adult Character.AI users and analyzed 4,664 chat sessions (464,687 messages) from 237 participants.
Key Findings:
- Users with smaller real-world social networks were more likely to report using chatbots primarily for companionship.
- Reporting companionship as the primary use was associated with lower psychological well-being.
- This negative association was notably stronger for users with highly intensive and dependent interaction patterns.
By triangulating self-reported usage, relationship descriptions, and real chat histories, the study reveals the psychological outcomes of different AI companionship engagement patterns.
