VC investor Matt Turck pointed out that the tech industry is failing to understand public resistance against AI data centers. He analyzed the underlying reasons for this pushback:
- Lack of trust: AI is mostly built by coastal tech elites who don't live near data centers, while local residents often don't trust these massive facilities.
- Job illusion: While there is demand for trade jobs, it is only temporary during the construction phase.
- Stranded assets: If the AI bubble bursts, communities fear being stuck with half-finished, gigantic empty warehouses.
- Real-world impact: Ordinary people don't find AI particularly helpful in their daily lives, yet they have to deal with the tangible electricity and energy generation impacts caused by these centers.
He argued that while some NIMBYism is involved, the concerns are not entirely unreasonable. The tech industry needs to do better rather than dismissing them as conspiracy theories.
