A user conducted a technical breakdown of a 2023 render of the Matic robot. The analysis suggests that the robot's shoulder only possesses two degrees of freedom (flexion and rotation) and lacks an obvious elbow joint mechanism, possibly pre-bent purely for aesthetics.
To compensate for these missing kinematic DoFs, the design likely relies heavily on Whole Body Control (WBC). By coordinating a highly capable mobile base with waist rotation, the robot can effectively simulate the missing reach. This approach offers valuable insights into minimalist mechanical design paired with intelligent algorithmic compensation in embodied AI.
