AI Designs Functional New Viruses, Raising Biosafety Concerns
didiTonic · reddit · 2026-08-09
Researchers used AI to design completely new viruses that do not exist in nature, successfully synthesizing 16 of them in the lab. These AI-generated viruses are bacteriophages, with some proving effective at killing antibiotic-resistant E. coli.
While this holds significant promise for combating antibiotic resistance, it marks a major leap for AI from generating text and images to designing complete viral genomes. Although physical synthesis still requires specialized labs, the rapid pace of the technology is raising serious biosafety concerns.
