With AI models making stunning progress in solving intractable mathematical problems, renowned mathematician Terence Tao warns that the field is facing its most severe crisis in over a century.
Speaking at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Tao stated that mathematicians only have months to react and must reimagine what it means to be a mathematician. He urged his colleagues to stop working passively and instead actively organize and advocate for a cultural overhaul to respond to external technological forces.
