Brin Reflects on Google's AI Strategy: Underinvested in Compute and Too Conservative

In a retrospective interview around the peak of Gemini, Google co-founder Sergey Brin admitted that the company made critical mistakes in the years following the publication of the Transformer paper.
He noted that Google failed to take the technology seriously at the time, underinvesting in scaling compute. Simultaneously, they were too conservative in bringing products to market out of fear that chatbots saying dumb things would cause PR issues. He acknowledged that OpenAI ran with the insight and succeeded, but emphasized that Google's long-standing R&D in neural networks—sparked by Jeff Dean's early explorations—laid the necessary foundation for their current progress.
