Affine Proposes 'Reason-Distillation' Mechanism to Drive Small Model Evolution
bittingthembits · x · 2026-08-08
AI project Affine recently introduced a novel 'reason-distillation' incentive mechanism to solve the performance degradation in traditional distillation, where smaller models struggle to accurately reproduce the complex reasoning trajectories of larger teacher models.
In this setup, a frontier model acts as the teacher, providing reference reasoning steps for diverse coding scenarios. Instead of merely imitating, competing miner models (students) search for and submit challenger models to find better reasoning paths. This competitive approach allows smaller models to inherit useful capabilities effectively while continuously pushing the frontier, eventually reaching users through products like LOGOS.
