Futuresearch suggests that Google is falling further behind in the frontier AI race than commonly perceived. Reports indicate that Google scrapped and rebuilt its base model after it stumbled on coding, implying their flagship pipeline was in worse shape than pessimistic estimates.
The firm doubts that the upcoming Gemini 4 will be a true frontier model upon release. They previously estimated Google to be 6-9 months behind the frontier, but now believe the gap has widened to approximately 12 months.
