Cognitive Scientist Argues LLMs Prove Language Does Not Describe Reality

Cognitive scientist Elan Barenholtz argues that AI’s large language models challenge our traditional understanding of language. While we typically think of language as a window that points toward and maps reality, LLMs demonstrate that language and imagery can produce coherent continuations without ever grounding themselves in external reality.
He suggests that this "autogenerative" capacity has always been present in human language. Meaning arises not by establishing facts about the world, but rather through language’s generative role in producing further language, imagery, and, ultimately, coordinated human action.
