LeCun: AGI Requires Conceptual Advances Beyond LLM Scaling

Commenting on Demis Hassabis stepping aside to focus on research, Yann LeCun explored the tension between short-term AI product races and long-term research within corporate environments. He noted that management focused on immediate impact might view long-term bets as a waste of resources.
However, he argued that if the ultimate goal is AGI, the horizon must be longer. Disputing the notion that AGI is just around the corner via LLM scaling, LeCun emphasized that achieving AGI requires fundamental conceptual advances, such as world models. To maximize progress toward this goal, researchers must sometimes adopt roles disconnected from immediate product cycles.
