Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather tracked his Claude Code usage over 8 weeks: 3.2 billion tokens and about 170 kWh of data center electricity. Per prompt, an agent's energy consumption is roughly 600 times more than a typical AI chat. This highlights how the low average energy figures reported by major tech companies distort the reality of agent-based AI workflows.
