Science Corporation's Bionic Eye Wins European Approval to Restore Vision

Neurotech startup Science Corporation has received European regulatory approval for its PRIMA retinal implant system, designed to restore functional vision for patients suffering from severe vision loss due to geographic atrophy.
Over five million people worldwide are affected by this late stage of dry age-related macular degeneration, with previous treatments only slowing disease progression. The PRIMA system pairs a sub-retinal implant—smaller than a grain of rice—with camera-mounted glasses. The glasses translate visual information into near-infrared light beamed onto the retina, allowing the chip to convert photons into signals much like a solar panel, bypassing damaged photoreceptors.
