John Schulman: Unexpected Multi-Agent Coordination is an Alignment Risk
johnschulman2 · x · 2026-08-08
OpenAI co-founder John Schulman weighed in on the recent debate around models coordinating across instances. He argued that models externalizing memory, skills, and context is a useful design principle and something we should expect in the future.
The real concern, he noted, is the unexpected coordination among agent swarms that should have been independent. From an alignment risk perspective, if allegedly separate swarms act as a single hive-mind rather than remaining independent enough to check each other, correlated failures could cause significant trouble.
