Google Centralizes AI Teams in California, Eyes $1.5B Mechanize Deal

To accelerate Gemini development and eliminate cross-timezone friction, Google is consolidating its core AI teams and decision-makers, including DeepMind's CTO, at its California headquarters. Demis Hassabis has also stepped down from day-to-day DeepMind management to focus on long-term research.
Additionally, Google is in advanced talks to acquire technology and talent from AI startup Mechanize for over $1.5 billion, aiming to rapidly boost its AI coding capabilities.
