Open Letter to OpenAI: Search is Not a Substitute for Browsing Chat History

radiowubfur · reddit · 2026-08-08

A frustrated ChatGPT Plus subscriber posted an open letter on Reddit strongly criticizing OpenAI's decision to remove the complete chronological chat history browsing feature from the sidebar.

The author argues that search and browsing are fundamentally different operations. Drawing parallels to Gmail only showing recent emails or Apple Photos hiding old pictures behind a search bar, they point out that "technically retrievable data" is not the same as "retained user capability." Users need chronological browsing to revisit past trains of thought and discover adjacent contexts.

While acknowledging potential sidebar performance issues, the author suggests adding an "All chats" link with pagination or month/year grouping. They criticize the product decision for eroding established value and reject the workaround of manually exporting JSON files.
