UBC Introduces 'Mirror Learning': Enabling Embodied AI to Learn by Watching Videos

The Pacific Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (PLAI) at UBC introduced the 'Mirror Learning' framework, aiming to enable AI to learn by 'observing' like humans.
- Core Mechanism: Uses video diffusion models to transform third-person demonstration videos into synthetic first-person perspectives. This is paired with an inverse dynamics model to infer actions, generating 'mirror data'.
- Training Efficacy: This data can train effective policies on its own or be combined with standard first-person data to further improve behavior cloning.
- Experimentation: The team trained a mirror video model in the CARLA simulator, successfully putting the learner in the demonstrator's visual shoes and utilizing Segment Anything to identify the demonstrator's pose and outline.
